In 2022, Tajikistan’s private telecom companies made $333 million

The income of private telecom operators in Tajikistan in 2022 amounted to about 3 billion 630 million somoni ($333 million), which is 14.9% more than in 2021, the Agency on Statistics under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan reports.

The income of the national telecom operator Tajiktelecom, State Unitary Enterprise Pochtai Tojik and structural subdivisions of the Communications Service under the government of the country amounted to only about 197 million somoni (about $20 million). This is 17.2% more than in 2021.

The total income of telecom operators in the country last year amounted to over 3.7 billion somoni with an increase of 15.1%.

The number of stationary telephone sets of the Tajiktelecom system at the beginning of January this year was over 273 thousand units. Of these, more than 84% (about 230 thousand) are home phones.

Meanwhile, in the updated (based on the results of January 2023) Speedtest Global Index rating for fixed broadband Internet speed, Tajikistan is in 109th place among 180 countries of the world.

The average download speed of wired Internet in the republic is indicated at 29.97 Mb / s, and downloads – 34.29 Mb / s. 

In terms of mobile Internet speed, the republic is in 134th place among 141 countries.

Deputy head of the Communications Service of Tajikistan Ilkhom Atoev said at a press conference on January 30 that the speed of the Internet is planned to be improved, and prices for it are to be reduced.

He noted that the Service intends to deal with this issue on the basis of the President’s order to develop the communications sector, provide high-speed Internet, reduce its cost and attract investors to this area.

Atoev added that a permanent headquarters has been created from among specialists and industry engineers.

Earlier, President Emomali Rahmon expressed dissatisfaction with the quality and speed of the Internet in the country. In his message to parliament, the president said: “Where do tourists go, basically? Where there is good internet.

He instructed the Communications Service, together with mobile operators and Internet providers, to take the necessary measures to improve the quality and reduce the cost of mobile communications and the Internet.
