Morocco Chairs the Session of the Arab League

The work of the 160th ordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States began this week at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States in Cairo, led by Morocco. The Moroccan ambassador to Egypt and permanent representative of the Kingdom to the Arab League, Ahmed Tazi, is leading this meeting, the aim of which is to prepare the Council of Foreign Ministers of the organisation, to be held the day after tomorrow.

As Tazi recalled, the presidency of the Kingdom of Morocco during the session of the Arab League Council coincides with two important events. Firstly, the preparation of the Arab Economic Development Summit scheduled for November in Mauritania, as well as the planning of the next Arab Summit to be hosted by Bahrain.  

He stressed that this session is being held at the same time as the preparation of a series of decisions, projects and documents that have been drafted in recent months and which will be presented to the Council of the League at ministerial level.

Tazi also expressed his hope that the Kingdom’s presidency would bring to the session a “real impetus” to the themes and issues to be addressed. In this respect, the meeting’s agenda includes a series of political, economic, social, legal, financial and administrative issues, highlighting the situation of the Palestinians, joint Arab action and water security in the Arab world. On this last point, Morocco can share its experience in the fight against drought thanks to the measures the government has developed to deal with this problem.

The session is also expected to address the latest developments in Libya, Yemen, Sudan and Somalia, as well as the situation of the islands of the United Arab Emirates occupied by Iran. In addition, League members will express solidarity with Lebanon and discuss the security of navigation and energy supplies in the Persian Gulf region, the need to establish a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East, and Arab relations with international and regional organisations and groups.
