Eastern Libya Begins Distributing Relief Funds to Derna Flood Victims
Authorities in eastern Libya have commenced distributing financial compensation to residents of the flood-ravaged city of Derna through a committee formed by the Benghazi-based government and Libyan National Army leadership.
On Thursday, an initial group of approximately 106 verified recipients affected by last month’s flooding received aid checks at an event held at Derna’s National Theater.
According to statements by officials, the dedicated compensation committee established by the interim government and LNA command in the east has started disbursing payments to registered and eligible households.
They noted that the process of identifying and compensating qualified beneficiaries will continue in the coming days as Derna works to recover from the devastating September floods caused by Mediterranean Storm Daniel.
Thousands were displaced when flash floods resulting from the storm overwhelmed dams near Derna, inflicting catastrophic damage. The local authorites estimate over 14,000 people were killed across Libya’s northeast.
