Map shows Morocco earthquake’s devastating impact on populated areas
A powerful earthquake in Morocco centered in High Atlas mountains struck around 11:11 p.m. local time (6:11 p.m. Eastern time) in the province of Al Haouz, about 43 miles (70 kilometers) south of Marrakesh.
The quake was felt in Marrakesh and also in Casablanca, Rabat, Fez and other cities.
The quake has sparked concern about landmarks that may have been damaged, particularly Marrakesh’s medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its bustling markets, tight streets, monumental Islamic architecture and perimeter of pink walls.
