Morocco is closely following recent events in Niger and stresses the importance of maintaining the stability of this brotherly country.
The remarks were made by Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and UNECA, Mohamed Arrouchi, at an urgent meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) on the situation in Niger.
Morocco trusts the wisdom of Niger’s people and vital forces to preserve the gains made, maintain the country’s important constructive regional role, and work towards realizing the aspirations of Niger’s brotherly people, said the Moroccan diplomat.
The Nigerien military announced on Wednesday July 26 evening the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum, democratically elected in 2021. The military junta presented itself as the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP).
Several countries and international organizations, including the United States, France, the UN, and ECOWAS have condemned the coup and demanded the restoration of democratic legitimacy in the country.
