Morocco to Play Friendly Game Against Cote D’ivoire
Morocco’s national football team will play a friendly game against Cote d’Ivoire on October 14 in Abidjan.
The game is part of the preparatory campaign for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, which will take place in Cote d’Ivoire next year.
The game will take place at 6 p.m. Moroccan time, Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) said today.
The football federation also set October 17 as the new date for the Liberia-Morocco AFCON qualifiers.
The game was initially scheduled for September 9, but was postponed due to the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco on September 8, killing nearly 3,000 people while over 5,500 people were injured.
FRMF announced the cancellation of the game due to the period of national mourning that was declared to show solidarity with the earthquake victims.
Morocco already qualified for the AFCON finals in March after South Africa and Liberia tied 2-2.
Zimbabwe, which was initially drawn in Group K alongside Morocco, Liberia, and South Africa, was disqualified by FIFA from playing in the qualifiers due to the Zimbabwean government’s interference in the affairs of the country’s football federation.
Morocco continues to top the list of African teams in FIFA’s latest national team rankings.
Senegal is the second on the list, followed by Tunisia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Egypt, and Algeria.
Globally, Morocco ranked 13th out of the 211 national teams featured. The Atlas Lions climbed one sport compared to the July rankings where they were 14th.
